A wonderful example of a comfy Outdoor Room

Outdoor rooms have become a cornerstone of home design, offering a seamless blend of indoor comfort and outdoor freshness. These spaces are intentionally created for relaxation, cooking, or entertaining, often featuring enclosures such as walls or screens and some form of overhead protection.

The concept is to extend the living space beyond the traditional confines of a home, allowing for a harmonious transition from the indoors to the natural environment. By incorporating elements like lounge/entertainment areas, kitchens/BBQs, al fresco dining, etc. homeowners can maximize the value and enjoyment of their property.

For those interested in creating their own outdoor oasis, there are numerous resources and guides available to inspire you. From outdoor furniture, rugs and lighting to arbors to outdoor fireplaces to water features, etc. There are no limits to your imagination when it comes to creating your perfect outdoor oasis. Here are some basic elements and examples to get your creative juices flowing:

Add a water feature

For tranquility and/or to attract birds. Here’s an example with a small footprint. Most simple fountains come with a recirculating water pump.

Create a Cozy Area

With furniture, pillows (in outdoor fabric like Sunbrella) and an overhead shade structure. Here’s an example with a rustic arbor structure nicely integrated with the garden and surrounded by plants:

Create a focal point

With a fire pit, an outdoor fireplace, a piece of art such as sculpture or even an outdoor kitchen if budget and space allows. Obviously, an outdoor kitchen and/or fireplace will require careful planning and local permits compared to a more portable firepit or sculpture approach. If you are concerned about staying warm, there are plenty of heat lamp options out there as well including hard-wired overhead heating.

With outdoor rugs. You can add floor pillows too like the one shown in the picture below:

Add some Light Sources:

Don’t forget to incorporate lighting! It can be in the form of hanging pendants or chandeliers, LED string lights, portable table and floor lamps, etc.

Outdoor Spas

and showers and even tubs can be in an outdoor setting with some added privacy screening. Adding a heat source may allow you to use the outdoor spa year around depending on our climate zone.

And to cap it off, here are a couple more examples of amazing Outdoor Rooms. On the left, this backyard with plain grey concrete pavers was completely transformed by adding potted plants, a lounge and dining area and string lights. The result is a fun and energetic Outdoor Room while still offering privacy. On the right, an example of a terrace in a beatiful Italian setting.
